Half a year later, on a sunny playground, Luo Huiyan—who had beautiful golden hair—kissed a jock.
Zhuang Ze saw Zhou Yunchen, whose eyes were dark with gloom, and his heart ached.
Zhou Yunchen fought with the jock. Luo Huiyan screamed at them to stop, but the two boys were like lions fighting over territory, neither willing to back down.
As Zhou Yunchen’s lip split and blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, Zhuang Ze rushed forward without thinking. He didn’t know how to fight; he acted purely on instinct, his mind completely blank.
The jock, lost in the heat of the moment and thinking Zhuang Ze was Zhou Yunchen’s backup, cursed and punched him in the stomach.
Zhuang Ze clutched his abdomen and fell to the ground, his ears ringing, his face pale.
Zhou Yunchen lost his temper and beat the jock until he was bruised and battered.
Later, a teacher arrived, and all three of them were disciplined. Zhuang Ze and Zhou Yunchen stood together in the hallway.
After a long silence, Zhou Yunchen thought of how Zhuang Ze had rushed in without hesitation and asked in a low voice, “What is it about her that makes her worth liking?”
Zhuang Ze’s stomach ached, but the pain in his heart was worse. He couldn’t answer the question, because he wanted to ask Zhou Yunchen the same thing:
What is it about her that makes her worth liking, enough for you to fight someone for her? He remembered Zhou Yunchen’s fierce expression—he had never seen him so angry, as if he wanted to beat the man who had taken his girl to death.
It wasn’t just anger; he was heartbroken, too. That made Zhuang Ze feel even worse.
Zhou Yunchen frowned deeply. He stared at the ground, clenched his fists, and muttered, “What is it about him that makes him worth liking?!”
Zhuang Ze knew Zhou Yunchen was really talking to himself: Luo Huiyan’s betrayal had broken his heart, which was why he was questioning himself like this.
Zhuang Ze opened his mouth, but the bitterness in his throat made it hard to speak. Finally, he managed to say, “I just like her. There’s no reason.”
Hearing this, Zhou Yunchen’s expression darkened even more.
Zhuang Ze didn’t dare look at him. He leaned against the wall, feeling a pain he couldn’t quite place.
When you like someone, there isn’t always a reason.
He liked Zhou Yunchen for no reason; Zhou Yunchen liked Luo Huiyan for no reason; Luo Huiyan liked someone else now, and that was also for no reason.
This wasn’t a math problem—there weren’t any formulas to explain it.
